Abstract

According to Islam, art and playing music are permissible (mubah) as long as they do not conflict with syara' law. Likewise, hearing singing on the radio, cassette radio, TV and other audiovisual media is permissible. The basis is to take the syara' rule which reads: The original law of everything is permissible (may be used and utilized), unless there is an argument that forbids it. As for songs that contain words that are not good (impolite), such as mentioning bad qualities (single men and women), or the characteristics of women who are still alive. The meaning of these words is singing mixed with things that have been prohibited by syara'. Regarding the art of calligraphy, architectural art, sculpture, martial arts and so on, Islam allows as long as it does not conflict with normal religion.
