Abstract

In the last 10 years, obesity cases in Indonesia have significantly increased, from 10.5 percent in 2007 to 21.8 percent in 2010. Bariatric surgery has become one of the alternative conservative medical treatments to address this issue. The role of bariatric surgery is still debated, both in terms of its risks and its legality in Islamic perspective. We explain the influence of the underlying reasons for bariatric surgery on its legality in the view of Islam and conclude that the surgery is permissible when it is for health reasons and prohibited when the goal is for cosmetic purposes
