Abstract

Religious tolerance has been a hallmark of Islamic civilization throughout its rich history. This article explores the development of religious tolerance in the Islamic world, with a focus on how religious tolerance adapts and changes in the context of globalization. The history of religious tolerance in Islam can be traced back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad SAW who advocated coexistence and respect for religious diversity in Arabia. Over the centuries, Muslim empires such as the Umayyad and Abbasid caliphates and the Ottoman Empire have demonstrated varying degrees of religious tolerance, allowing non-Muslim communities to practice their religion in their territories. However, the concept of religious tolerance faces new challenges and opportunities in the era of globalization. Increased contact and cultural exchange united Muslim communities with different religious beliefs and practices. This led to a reassessment of traditional Islamic concepts of religious tolerance and sparked debate about the role of pluralism and interreligious dialogue in today's world. This article also discusses contemporary examples of religious tolerance in Muslim countries and efforts to increase understanding and cooperation between different religious communities. This emphasizes the importance of increasing religious tolerance in facing global challenges such as religious extremism and xenophobia. In conclusion, the history of religious tolerance in Islamic civilization is a dynamic and continuously developing story. In the era of globalization, the need for mutual respect and coexistence between representatives of different religions is increasingly recognized, reflecting the basic principles of Islam.
